What Is Spiritual Care?

Being there, guiding, directing, advising, helping to overcome, rescuing, supporting, offering a shoulder, showing compassion—these words reveal the essence of spiritual care and support. But what do we really mean by spiritual care and spiritual support?

Defining Spiritual Care

Spiritual care is both spiritual and psychological support provided by a mentor, member of the clergy, spiritual counselor, or chaplain. It is offered to someone in distress—a counselee, victim, or patient—to help them face challenges, heal from wounds, overcome grief, and find answers to spiritual questions.

Unlike psychology, which focuses on relieving discomfort, spiritual care goes deeper. Its goal is to lead a person toward healing and freedom by relying on God, His Word, and the guidance of trusted mentors.

Why Spiritual Care Matters

Spiritual care has several key elements:

  1. It helps us see that problems are not only emotional or psychological but also part of our spiritual journey.
  2. It connects us to God’s Word, giving wisdom and direction for life.
  3. It uses powerful stories and examples that show how to overcome trials.
  4. It offers hope and comfort through faith in God.
  5. It includes prayer, which restores peace and deepens connection with God.
  6. It reminds us of the value of community, where believers support each other.
  7. It sets clear moral and ethical principles for healthy living.
  8. It inspires service and gives meaning to helping those in need.

Components of Spiritual Care

  • Inner Healing – The process of God restoring the soul.
  • Emotional Wounds – Painful experiences that leave lasting marks.
  • Trauma and PTSD – Psychological and spiritual scars caused by overwhelming events.
  • Empathy – Listening with understanding and without judgment.
  • Psychotherapy – Professional help that considers body, soul, and spirit together.
  • Psychoanalysis – Exploring deeper motives and conflicts that affect a person’s life.

The spiritual counselor becomes an instrument in God’s hands, helping people open themselves to the healing work of the Holy Spirit.

Principles of Spiritual Care

Spiritual care requires patience and integrity. As Eric Ewalds writes in Spiritual Care and Therapy, there are important principles every counselor should follow:

  • Don’t rush healing – Deep wounds take time and can’t be solved in half an hour.
  • Don’t generalize – Each person’s pain is unique and deserves attention.
  • Don’t moralize – People need guidance, not condemnation.
  • Avoid manipulation – Trust is essential for true healing.
  • Don’t overprotect – Encourage responsibility and personal growth.

Three Types of Spiritual Care

  1. Personal – Honest self-examination before God with biblical guidance.
  2. Informal – Support through friendly conversations and advice.
  3. Intensive – Structured, focused work between counselor and counselee, often in ministry.

Walking the Journey Together

Spiritual care is about entering someone’s inner world, listening with empathy, and guiding them toward restoration. It is not about quick fixes but about walking with people as they take steps toward healing, freedom, and peace in God.
